Designing for Canadian winters

Systems ยท October 1, 2026

A modular home that is only comfortable in summer is not much use in this country. For Randolph, high-performance insulation is the first design priority.

A tight, insulated envelope

Insulated foam wall, floor and roof panels, weather barriers and a steel frame form the structure, with efficient glazing selected to balance natural light against thermal performance.

Heating and cooling

A heat-pump system provides both heating and air conditioning, with appropriate ventilation and a smart thermostat connected to the master control system.

Protecting the systems

The hot-water compartment includes freeze protection and safe drainage, and the underfloor enclosure is insulated or ventilated as engineering requires, with lockable access panels for maintenance.
